Towns in Malaga Province

This small town of barely 5,000 inhabitants north-west of Antequera is probably most famous for its cadaverous celebrity El Tempranillo, the legendary 19th century bandit born in nearby Jauja and buried in Alameda's Iglesia de la Purisima Concepcion church. The so-called Principe de la Sierra, prince of the mountains, is the most colourful of Andalucia's many bandit heroes.

Alcaucin

The name comes from the Arab Al-Cautin which means "The Arches". A village of approximately 1,500 inhabitants and flanked on one side by the peak of the Maroma at 2,080ms the highest in the La Axarquia. In the Boquete de Zarraya is a natural passage at the border of Granada Province in which in August 1983 a jawbone of a Neanderthal man was discovered. Alcaucin also has the Castle and Village of Zalia, and the Arab baths of sulphur waters at Las Majadas are worth a visit.

Alfarnate

The area is mainly agricultural and the village has been in existence since the Muslim period, remebered every September 12th with the Moors and Christians feast of Ntra. Sra de Masalud.

Alhaurin De La Torre

Alhaurin de la Torre is the border between the valley and the coast with a landscape spread among the sierra and the valley, between the city and the countryside. In the sierra it is a balcony of pine groves, open to the Guadalhorce valley near Alhaurin el Grande, and also open to the Valley and the City of Malaga.

Alhaurin El Grande

Located in the inside slope of the Sierra de Mijas (Mijas Mountains), in the place known as "Hoya de Malaga", between the Fahala river and the Blas Gonzalez stream, the Arabs named it Alhaurin, which some historian translate by "the valley", from the Arab root "Al-Haur", due to its situation upon the valley of the Fahala river, while others consider the name coming from the Arab word "Alhauerin" which means "Almighty God".

Almargen

Almogia

This small town roughly halfway between Malaga and Antequera is rightly proud of its name. It derives from the Moorish al-megia or al-mexia, 'the pretty one', a reference to its position in the foothills of the Sierra del Hacho, in the shadow of the Sancti-Petri peak.

Alora

The town of Alora crowns a small hill over the Guadalhorce river. The castle's towers, once vigil to the comings and goings of men and inland merchandise, in the Bobastro domains, outstand over the city, which shelters discretely between two small headlands and the powerful Hacho mountain (559 m.). .

Alozaina

The town of Alozaina occupies a slightly high position in the western region of the Guadalhorce valley. Its lands extend from the Rio Grande valley, to the south, up to the peak of the Sierra Prieta to the north, thus joining the lands of the valley with the western mountains of the Serrania de Ronda.

Antequera

A visit to this historical Andalucian town is a journey almost 5,000 years back in time, beginning with the Bronze Age and the native Iberians. The timeline is there to be followed in this fascinating city's profusion of burial mounds, dolmens, Roman baths, a Moorish Castle, Gothic churches, Renaissance fountains and baroque bell towers

Archidona

In the north of Malaga Province, about 50 kilometres from Malaga City (and 20 kilometres from Antequera), at the foothills of the Sierra de Gracia, is the welcoming village of Archidona. Located in the northern part of the Province of Malaga the urban area is situated at the foot of the Sierra de Gracia and surrounded by the Sierras del Conjuro and Grajasa.

Ardales

Ardales is at the foot of a large crag which has the ruins of an old castle, near the river Turon, on a ridge between the northern foothills of the Serrania de Ronda (sierra of Alcaparain) and the Antequera depression (a complex of the Guadalhorce reservoirs). Although one would like to set this municipality in the Valle del Guadalhorce, there are no arguments that support any similarity with the characteristics of that region.

Arriate

Arriate is a jack-in-the-box. a surprise package in a plain wrapper. Enter it from any direction, and it appears to be a sleepy rural village waiting, with no sense of urgency, for its grass to grow and its paint to dry.

Benalauria

This town, which is at 241 metres altitude above sea level at only 2 kilometres from the coast, is converted at the sides in a large balcony overlooking the mediterranean.

Bobastro

Between 879 and 918, 'Umar ibn Hafsun led a revolt against the caliphal government at Cordoba from his fortified outpost at Bobastro built on the Mesas de Villaverde in the Sierra de la Pizarra mountain range near Ronda. Cartama

Its territory is the frontier between the Guadalhorce valley region and La Hoya in the Montes de Malaga, which favours a contrasting aspect with the agricultural plain, which spreads orange trees and vegetables on both sides of the Guadalhorce and the rounded hills on the north of the municipality on which olives and almonds with dispersed houses look out to the valley of the unmistakable landscape of the Montes de M

Casabermeja

Casabermeja is located on the side of a hill next to the motorway which links Malaga with the north of Spain. It still retains its narrow streets of two-storey whitewashed houses, and its most noteworthy building is Our Lady

Casarabonela

This mountainous front of the highland covered with pines mixed with limestone, acts as a background to the town of Casarabonela.

Casares

To say that Casares is beautiful is an understatement. Most of the white villages are beautiful but there is something very special about the sight of Casares that causes the visitor to park the car and simply stare or take a photo.

Its geographical location in an area where the valley widens and the relief softens, makes the town

El Chorro

There are three stunningly beautiful turquoise coloured lakes bordered by pine forests, this is Malagas Lake District. There are in fact three artificial lakes created by a dam built across the dramatic 200 m high Guadalhorce river gorge, known as the Gargante del Chorro. Watch out for the eagles that continually circle around the sheer cliffs. Belongs to the town of Ardales.

The municipal region of Guaro is situated in the region of the Guadalhorce valley, between Coin and Tolox and next to the Grande river, one of the main tributaries of the Guadalhorce river.
